Find and read the meter safely
Most meters sit in a ground box near the property line or boulevard. The City map shows approximate location; the box is commonly about 10 by 15 inches. Only remove the lid if it is safe.
Turn off all water-using fixtures and appliances. For a digital meter, wait 15 to 30 minutes and look for a continuing plus sign or changing display. An older meter’s moving sweep hand or small indicator wheel can show continuing flow.

Separate an inside leak from the service line
After turning fixtures off, use the main shutoff inside the home, often in a basement, garage or crawlspace. Recheck the meter. Continuing flow may indicate the underground line between meter and home; stopped flow points toward an inside leak.
Do not turn water off at the meter. Public Works at 250-758-5222 can shut it off for repairs at no cost. The City guidance is a screening method, not proof of the exact damaged pipe.

Repair records and billing
Metered water use affects the user-rate bill, so delay can add charges. Keep invoices and before-and-after repair photos. Monitor use after repair to confirm it fell.
A billing adjustment is not automatic and only follows repair and an application with evidence. The City does not cover the repair itself. User Rates can help at 250-755-4525 extension 2 or user.rates@nanaimo.ca.
